Holloway thrift heaven: Blue 17

Holloway thrift heaven: Blue 17

Just up from Holloway Road tube station, behind a rather unassuming door with the CND logo is Blue 17 (formerly 21st Century Retro), a cavernous vintage and second-hand shop in the style of an American thrift store.

Established in 1989, the shop stocks over 6,000 recycled vintage, retro and contemporary garments shoes, boots, bags and accessories from the USA and  Europe.

Its crammed rails are positively cracking under the weight of leather coats, Seventies shirts, Eighties T-shirts, old Levis and vintage dresses. Most of the stock covers the later decades from the Sixties onwards but if you’re happy to rummage you will come across some Thirties, Forties and Fifties vintage. Prices are decent (a Sixties beaded dress will set you back £50, a men’s Eighties T-shirt £15) but not dirt cheap.

Take your time here and you could unearth a real vintage treasure, or simply pick up on-trend cut-off denim shorts, second-hand brogues or a cool T-shirt.
