Don't believe the hype: Rellik

Don’t believe the hype: Rellik

Rellik, a high-end vintage boutique in Kensington, has long been hailed as one of London’s greatest vintage shops. We honestly wonder why.

The shop specialises in designer labels, including a vast collection of vintage Vivienne Westwood as well as other brands such as Dior, YSL, Ossie Clarke to mention just a few. Most pieces are in mint condition, which is reflected in the price (prices range from £30 up to £500).

However, while this sort of range might have been special ten years ago, there are now plenty of high-end vintage shops across London offering a better selection at better prices. House of Liza, William Vintage or Merchant Archive are far superior when it comes to vintage designer wear and if you’re looking for that amazing, yet affordable one-off vintage find, you’re better off  heading to the treasure troves that are Blackout II or Deborah Woolf.

Head to Rellik if you don’t have to stick to a budget or if you don’t mind a small selection of items, you might still find that vintage on-off. But don’t believe the hype.

Hey, what do you guys think to ‘One of a kind’ in portobello?

  2. For me vintage shopping is never about labels. Sure, a vintage Burberry trench coat can be an exciting find among the rails, but I’ve never got the appeal of exclusively designer vintage shops. Focusing on labels seems to take away from the fun of vintage finds for me!

I totally agree! I’ve never ever “got” Rellik – I’ve visited so many times thinking maybe I just got my timing wrong and was missing all their brilliant offerings, but I’ve never once found something I really liked – and when I have I’ve found it so overpriced I’ve immediately put it back on the rail..

I loved Rellik. They were absoloutely lovely in there, really sweet and helpful. You really got the feel that they weren’t just trying to get you to buy stuff, but really cared and wanted to help. They recommended other places to find things to customize what I had bought, and honestly were absolutely lovely. I don’t see what all the cynicism is for. I think it’s a great shop.

I have always had really positive experiences in Rellik, which keeps me going back. I am a researcher as well as a (small time) collector and Steve and his partners have always gone out of their way to help me. They have integrity and are generous people with their time and their knowledge. Why so critical?

  6. Rellik is a fantastic shop, with a wonderful, and very large selection of vintage clothing, beautifully displayed. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and not in the least pushy. The shop is well laid out and is a pleasure to enter.

I do find this review by ‘Lena’ very strange. On the one hand she points out, rightly, that Rellik have a massive selection of vintage Vivienne Westwood, Ossie Clark, Dior and YSL ‘in mint condition’ – hardly a negative point. And the prices that she quotes are in fact very reasonable for such prestigious labels, and certainly represent better value than some of the other vintage stores that she endorses. I always recommend Rellik to anyone interested in vintage, and I entirely agree with Sally when she asks the question ‘Why so critical?’

  7. It does seem a little critical but I think she was just pointing out that although Rellik does have a great selection, so do a lot of other London boutiques that are often overlooked. In terms of proximity, The Gathering Goddess is really close to Rellik and is fantastic. Merchant Vintage (mentioned) is really great too! It’s not fair for one company to have a monopoly on the vintage market, especially when it comes to coverage — we need to spread the vintage love around 🙂

I both sell and buy at Rellik. They have an incredible collection and, yes, in mint condition. On the selling to Rellik side, I find their purchase price is fair and they pay immediately. No consignment nonsense where clothes are later returned in a sorry state.
