Three great London shops for 1920s vintage
The Twenties are having a bit of a revival at the moment – Art deco inspired fashion dominated the catwalks this year and one of the most anticipated film releases is Buz Luhrmann’s version of seminal period novel The Great Gatsby. With highstreet shops awash with drop-waist dresses and t-bar shoes, it’s easy to go for reproduction to create a period look, however, there are plenty of amazing vintage shops in London where you can get the real deal.
1) The Vintage Emporium
This cafe-cum-shop (pictured) just off Brick Lane is one of the best stockists of Twenties vintage in London. The Victorian-style cafe upstairs is charming but the real treasure is the shop in the basement. Exquisite flapper dresses, beaded bags and cloche hats wait to be discovered, while Twenties-loving gentleman will like the period shoes and evening attire.
2) Tin Tin Collectables
This little shop should be reason alone for a trip to Alfies Antique Market in Marylebone. Beautiful Twenties evening dresses, old luggage and high-necked, fur-trimmed opera coats in near mint condition have been lovingly collected from all over the world to tempt you with their glorious design and intricate details.
3) Anita’s Vintage Fashion Fair
Admittedly not a shop but one of London’s longest running vintage fairs, Anita’s regularly brings together hand-picked vintage sellers, some of whom specialise in antique and early vintage items. Expect to find oh-so-rare Twenties daywear, jewellery and fabrics at very good prices.
