Fillm season and Cancan party: celebrating Toulouse-Lautrec at the Institut Français

To accompany the exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec and Jane Avril: Beyond the Moulin Rouge at The Courtauld Gallery (16 June – 18 Sept), Ciné lumière presents a season of films celebrating the exuberance of Paris’ cabaret culture and bohemian life. The seductive atmosphere and excessive nature of Paris’ cabaret scene lent itself perfectly to the big screen and attracted directors from Jean Renoir to Baz Luhrrman.

John Huston’s biopic Moulin Rouge (2 July) opens the programme and pays homage to Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic artwork. Moulin Rouge! (3 July) by Baz Luhrrman is a riotous celebration of Paris’ most decadent club whilst Lautrec(6 July) by Roger Planchon offers a fascinating portrait of the artist focusing on his intimate relationships. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dr Nancy Ireson, Curator of the Toulouse-Lautrec and Jane Avril exhibition.

In collaboration with the BFI, Ciné lumière presents a preview of Jean Renoir’s classic French Cancan on a brand new print, which will be followed by a party with Cancan dancers The French Kicks, DJ Sacha Dieu and complimentary absinthe cocktails (15 July).

We are giving away one pair of tickets for the film French Cancan at 8.40pm on Fri 15 July, which includes entry to the Cancan party at 10.30pm. To win email quoting ‘cancan’ in the subject line. The winner will be drawn at random at midday on Friday 8 July. There is no cash alternaiv
