A three day special: Champagne Charlie at Wilton's Music Hall

Christopher Beeching premiers a special One Act version of his entertainment about George Leybourne (the man known as Champagne Charlie) at Wilton’s Music Hall, the world’s last surviving complete example of an early Music Hall. Linked to the publication of Beeching’s biography of Leybourne, the show will be staged as part of a 3 day celebration of this Lion Comique of the Victorian Music Hall.

Based on the life and songs of George Leybourne, and written by Glyn Jones, Champagne Charlie has been seen at venues throughout the UK. A CD has been recorded of Leybourne’s songs and excerpts from the show have been broadcast on television and radio, most recently on BBC4’s Rude Britannia, as well as in the forthcoming BBC4 documentary on the history of music hall. The colourful costumes are reproductions of those worn by Leybourne in his performances. The pianist will be Paul Knight.
