At the BFI: Vivien Leigh season
Born 100 years ago, Vivien Leigh remains one of Britain’s brightest screen stars. Now the BFI celebrates her career with a dedicated season of her films.
The story of Vivien Leigh has all the elements of tragedy. A woman of incomparable beauty fell madly in love with dashing young actor Laurence Olivier, deserting her husband and child to be with him. For several years, their stars were in the ascendant but, gradually, Olivier’s career began to eclipse her own.
She suffered two traumatic miscarriages and, over time, the dimming of their once burning passion saw the pair begin to drift apart. Her health, physical and mental, deteriorated and at the age of 53 she died from tuberculosis.
